“Fuck!” Zeke yells as he does chest compressions on Dylan.

I count with him and then give Dylan breaths in between Zeke’s compressions. We both know Dylan is dead, but we’ve seen people come back from the dead before, so we don’t stop. Not when we both feel guilty. He’s dead because of us. We weren’t fast enough.

It’s one of the many reasons why Zeke and I have never fallen in love before. It puts our job at risk. We can’t do as good of a job when we are thinking of each other, instead of the people we should be protecting.

So we keep trying. Zeke hammers into Dylan’s chest. I try everything to breathe life into his lungs. And we both ignore Nora and Lucy’s sobs as they hold each other in the corner.

“He’s dead,” Jayden says, standing over us, trying to get us to stop.

Jayden puts a hand on my shoulder, knowing Zeke is too focused. Zeke doesn’t lose men. I’m the one who is going to need to convince Zeke to stop.

I sit back on my heels with tears in my eyes. Dylan was a good man, a good worker. He was always someone I could call when I needed someone for a job. It kills me to feel responsible for his death.

“Shit,” I curse, wiping my mouth and gripping my hair at the scalp.

“It’s time. We have to go, or we will have more death on our hands,” Jayden says, looking at a terrified Nora and Lucy.

I nod. I can do this.

“Zeke, we have to go,” I say, gently touching his shoulder.

“Not yet, I can bring him back,” Zeke says, pumping over him.

“Zeke, we have others to protect,” I say.

Zeke frowns. “I can’t. I don’t let men die. I don’t—”

“Zeke,” I demand. “We have to go, now.” My voice is firm and loud.

Zeke looks up at me, his face full of pain matching my own. But I don’t let my pain out. Zeke can’t see my pain. He needs to see the machine. He needs to see that we have to keep going. We have more people to protect. We failed, but we can’t fail again.

I hold out my hand. Zeke takes it reluctantly.

I look to Jayden. “Car?”

He nods. “Follow me.”

Jayden leads us into the bedroom, pushes the bed out of the way, and lifts a hatch to an underground tunnel.

Zeke and I eliminated the immediate threat. But if Bishop is smart, he’ll have more men coming. Or he’ll be tracking us. So it’s safer to disappear down a tunnel then head back out to the main street.

Jayden hops down.

“Go,” I say to Lucy and Nora.

Both eye the gun I’ve picked up carefully. “I won’t let anything happen to either of you,” I promise them.

They nod, and then follow Jayden down. I pick up Zeke’s gun and hand it to him.

“Let’s make good on my promise,” I tell him.

He nods, back in protection mode. We both follow, ready to shoot anyone who follows us, but no one does.
